Breaking the most awkward Swiss law

Posted by Fernando Colaco on July 31st, 2011 at 12:41 am

OK, for a moment of twisted humor, and before leaving my apartment (and Switerland in 2 days), I decided to shoot this (silly) short video. I’ve been very correct with all legislation and very happy with how things actually work in Switzerland. But couldn’t resist to mock this one particular law:

In Switzerland (or at least in Geneva) it’s strictly FORBIDDEN TO FLUSH your toilet after 10pm!

I can imagine how many people suffer by allowing their floaties to stay there, waiting for next morning. I confess I broke this law a few times (not that dramatic, and without ski mask). And was lucky enough to get away with it, as opposite to some poor people that have some vigilante old lady either calling the police (not joking) or writing a letter to the real estate agency (not joking either). Come on! If you can’t stand people’s normal noises (applies to other ones too), as far as they are not abusive, in a building, then you should try finding a mansion of your own or for a lower budget, some cave. I remind you it’s a building, meaning you are sharing it with several other people, so there will be occasional after-hours steps, pets, babies crying, sex, and yes, people flushing! As far as it’s an occasional thing it’s normal and I don’t go crazy because some neighbor’s dog barked 3 times during the week. This is slightly dedicated to my upstairs (yes, not downstairs!) neighbor that insisted I could not watch movies on a Saturday afternoon (at moderate loudness) or even listen to music, knocking at my door a couple of times to menace me of complaining to the real estate agency… and then being noisy herself with some odd shoes at late night (and systematically noisy in another way too, specially way over 10pm, but I can’t tell here how). Well, at least I was able to flush a few times without her noticing…
