Summer! Finally!

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

At last. Seems like we jumped directly from a crappy “feels-like-Winter” Spring season to real Summer. But Friday it was really hot so I decided to spend the weekend on the lake with my nephew and niece. My sister and brother in law joined us Saturday for lunch and a quick stroll on the lake.

Captain Colaco?

Here’s a few more pictures. Most of them crappy since they were taken with the iPhone.

It was really sunny, no clouds and the water temperature in the middle of the lake was 21°C which ended up inviting me (and my nephew) for a swim. Looking forward for next weekend. And for my face sunburn to look less obvious by Monday.

Another A-Bike Sunday (and more tests)

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Once again, I spent the weekend with Roxa and Abdellah in Bottens (VD-Switzerland) and there was another Sunday-afternoon bike ride. And a few more tests for the A-Bike:

  • Handling in really bad dirt roads (lots of rocks)
  • Extreme uphill (and downhill) trails

This was not an extremely long trip and was quite quick. Only around 9 Km (4,5 each way), at least that’s what the GPS says. We also did a big break for coffee and water before returning. We only took a few patches of “normal” road and most of the way was done on dirt tracks, really bad ones in some moments. I was quite impressed how the A-Bike handled the situation here. Very good. Yes, you feel bigger rocks and some holes very well, but you can briefly (and in advance) just take your ass out of the saddle if there’s a big incoming obstacle. After this technique was mastered, I found it quite useful also for tougher uphill situations. Makes a huge difference and I never tried it before (don’t know why but seemed weird). It feels kind of “running in the air” but way faster and with less effort than running uphill. Downhill I find I only use the front (right) breaks, as I do for all other situations. The left ones are too violent and the back of the bike starts sliding sideways. I am too lazy to do some adjustements on the breaks but I eventualy need to have a closer look on these. Overall, no problem with the (front) breaks. Neither with dirt tracks. Neither with “not so soft” uphill moments.

Here are some pictures of the day:

First big A-Bike ride

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Finally I had an opportunity to try the A-Bike in a longer ride than the usual daily home-office-home and occasionally around the lake in Geneva. Also the Swiss countryside is a little bit more interesting than buildings. This was in Bottens, near Lausanne, where I spent the weekend at my friends Teresa “Roxa” and Abdellah.

After a trip to IKEA, which is more than good for extreme leg warm up already (not to say we were really tired), we just picked their two “normal” bikes and the A-Bike I had on the trunk of my car. Now I am really sure this thing is more than fine handling uphill, rougher terrain and some obstacles, and specially longer rides. My friends gave it a try too and helped doing a series of videos which I compiled in this clip:

It was a really nice sunny afternoon and my hay fever was giving me a little break. There’s one thing I am really sure now: it is also FUN to ride the A-Bike and it does not feel uncomfortable at all, even after a few hours (I use the default saddle). I am looking forward for next weekend. Here’s also some photos of the afternoon (click them to see the bigger version):

Some more A-Bike pictures

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Just wanted to post a few more pictures of my last toy/gadget:
As of today I found that I no longer have to stop and fold/unfold. It’s easy enough to do it while walking in a few seconds before starting to ride. Same for folding after jumping out of the bike.

Sabrine’s test drive

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

I had my colleague Sabrine testing my A-Bike for her first time in our office at lunch break.
I am now using it (the bike) for my everyday home-office-home for around 9 days and still very happy with it.

It cuts my usual 15 minutes walking into 3 to 4 minutes. Also great to go to and ride by the lake. After a few tries it just doesn’t feel that much different from a normal bike.
It was a little bit wobbly until I got used but now it’s completely fine and it’s fun to ride actually. Despite the tiny wheels, the gears were engineered so you don’t have to paddle like crazy.

Well, done Sir Clive Sinclair (also responsible for the ZX Spectrum which is responsible for my dive into computer programming which is what I mostly do today).

A-Bike

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

My A-Bike just arrived last week. As I opened the box (my colleagues are used to new gadgets and weird stuff being delivered to me once in a while), I noticed it was smaller than what I was expecting and lighter too. I was a little bit afraid that it would be to fragile but that’s not the case. After a few tries to fold/unfold this is what I was able to do at home in the end of the day. It was more than tested at the office, but I’ll post the results after some road tests later.

Here it is: the very first post in this blog. And by the way, what is this all about? Well, this will be the place where I’ll post a lot of nonsense pictures, weird videos, useless articles I might come up with and whatever I decide to post, whenever I decide to post, after all, this is my blog.
