New Gadget: COOL-ER eBook reader
Here’s my video review for my latest gadget, which I am loving so far. Tina helped me on this review.
Apart from what is said on the video, I should add that it’s charged by USB (same way you transfer your files to it (Mac/PC/LINUX). One charge lasts for 8000 page changes so that’s A LOT. You can buy it at Firebox (link after the video). Apart from the formats it says it can read in the instructions (PDF, EPUB, TXT, JPG, HTML(text only),RTF,PRC,MP3) I found out by accident it also opens CHM files :)
Also it has included 1GB of storage but you can add an SD card reader up to 4GB and that should be more than enough. I transferred already my entire eBook collection, plus some articles (HTML saved directly from the browser), some magazine issues and a few maps.
I tried reading PDFs on screen, in my laptops, even in the netbook. It works, but after 20 pages or so I have a huge headache and get tired. It’s also impossible to do that in direct (or with a bit) of sunlight. I tried a few free and one paid eBook/PDF reader app on the iPhone… same result. Doesn’t “feel” like paper to your eyes. I end up doing printouts when I really need to read a lot of pages. Now I don’t have to do it anymore (or carry gigantic tech books around).
It’s available in different colors (should I mention the iPod nano design ripoff again?).
Another thing… it’s way lighter than the Sony readers I was tempted to buy (and way cheaper than both those or the Kindle).
I ordered it Wednesday night from Firebox UK (link just below - click the picture) and it was in my hands Friday morning. I used it the entire weekend. It’s obviously not exactly the same as printed book, it takes about a second to change betwen pages and you can’t obviously flip pages or smell the ink, but you can navigate the TOC and bookmark and change font size ant type. So far I just LOVE IT!
