New coffee machine: Nespresso Lattissima
For every computer programmer (read geek) there’s only one piece of hardware at their place more important than his computer. That will be… the other computer. Or in my case that will be the coffee machine, since my other computer (my new iMac that replaced the last Windows machine ever in my house) didn’t deserve a dedicated post like this. I am actually quite impressed that there is no computer box yet with an included coffee machine.
So, I decided to buy a new coffee machine. I knew it had to be the Nespresso system like my 3 year old one (and still working fine) I am donating to a friend. I am yet to find any coffee brand / system that results in better espressos without lots of hassle. After a few trips to the usual stores I found the perfect one. A Nespresso machine, not gigantic, that apart from the usual espresso and lungo does… Capuccino and Latte Macchiato (and a few other things) with fresh milk! Obviously this means that from yesterday, Starbucks is getting less 7.80 CHF for my almost daily Caramel Macchiato. Unfortunatelly I am not Starbucks free, unless someone comes up with an Espresso-Brownie-and-Raspberry-White-Chocolate-Cheesecake-Automatic-Machine. Not likely to happen soon.

I did the usual routine after checking the prices in stores, which were between 500 and 570 CHF (340 and 390 EUR). I did my 10 seconds online comparison (trough the usual toppreise.ch) to find it for only 355 CHF (243 EUR) in this online store! This is a new machine, not secondhand or refurbished, so the price tag difference is huge. I just checked now and they do deliver worldwide, in case someone is interested.
I received the machine the next day, at work. That was yesterday, and “just to try it out” I unboxed it and it flawlessly served 5 caramel macchiatos and 2 cappucinos in the office. And perfect, not some so-so hot milk with coffee. Espressos are great as usual with Nespresso. The milk froth and foam in the lattes is really perfect. Tina (who had 2 caramel macchiatos in a row) even said it’s better than the Starbucks one. I just can’t find any difference (apart from cost). I leave you one of my usual boring videos, just captured this morning at home:

Nespresso machines are TERRIBLE.Nespresso lies and says the machines are made in Switzerland. Nespresso machines are made in China. Nespresso machines break after six months. I also hear Nestle Nespresso machines have water tanks hear that contain the toxic chemical bisphenol A

First of all, I don’t drink coffee anymore and the machine is now there for guests, basically. Well, following your speech, I believe you won’t drink any coffee that doesn’t say Starbucks on it (which, by the way, I used to consider crap). My previous machine was more than 3 years older when I bought this one (over an year) and it’s still working more than fine with its new owner, so both mysteriously passed that six months life expectancy you suggest. Which would be odd considering all of them have 2 years warranty.
I know lots of people (me included) trying all kinds of coffee machines and after they buy a Nespresso one, they stop this trial and error process. That might mean something also.
And by the way, following your logic, Apple is a Chinese brand, not from the US, since the iPhone and most of the hardware is assembled in China, right?
Regarding bisphenol A (the new fashion thing to use in finger pointing) is far less dangerous than the diet most people follow everyday, getting completely blinded any time the industry points a new dangerous thing. I worked in marketing too many years and still astonishes me how people digest everything marketing (and mostly counter-marketing) throws at them (not talking about buying products).
